Tips for Eliminating Waste
We believe it’s important for painters to take responsibility of the environmental impact their DIY projects have on the earth. That’s why we’ve come up with some tips to help you reduce the amount of waste you produce!
Buy only what you need
To avoid throwing away excess paint, try to purchase only what you need for your projects. Start by taking a few measurements to find out how much surface area you need to cover. Our quarts will cover approximately 120 square feet, pints cover approximately 60 square feet, and 4 oz jars cover approximately 15 square feet. Of course this is affected by a few different factors like paint color, the type of surface you’re painting, how you apply the paint, etc. For example, if you’re painting a project that has 30 square feet of surface to paint, you could apply two full coats with one pint of paint.

Store your paint properly
After your paint has been opened it’s guaranteed to last for one year, but with proper storage it could last even longer! Follow these tips to avoid throwing out dried up leftovers.
A) Create a tighter seal by wiping down the edge of your jar before closing it. This also makes it much easier to reopen the jars later!
B) It doesn’t hurt to stretch plastic wrap over the top of the jar before putting the lid back on.
C) Try storing your jars upside down to create an airtight seal.
D) Store your paint at room temperature year-round. Don’t leave it in areas that will dip below 10°C (50°F) or rise above 30°C (86°F).
Reuse leftover paint for future projects
If you’ve got any extra paint leftover when your project is finished, there are a few ways you can use it up instead of throwing it out.
A) Save it for touch-ups in case your furniture gets bumped or scratched.
B) Look for some smaller home decor items that you could paint to match your newly refinished furniture such as candlesticks or picture frames.
C) Mix leftover colors together to create your own custom hue! This is a fun way to experiment with color creation and use up small amounts of multiple colors. Check out our color mixing recipes for some inspiration.
D) Gift it to a friend who could use it on a small project.
